"I have been driven to work in any capacity that would help to solve serious social ills. Furthering my education has always been the foundation on which I've based my plan to accomplish this goal. Education is freedom and in all of its forms, not just academia, it is very important to me. Because of the CAYF, during and after college, I have been free to focus on my studies and volunteer my free time instead of taking a job. I have been a tutor, served as a cheer coach, and worked with abused and neglected children among other civic engagements. This is so important to me because I have been so blessed to have so many wonderful people, CAYF included, to take an interest in my self-development and my education. It has been only through the grace of GOD and my focus that I have not been a victim to environmental circumstances that were out of my control. I plan to one day give back to the Foundation more than I have received." - Russella Davis, Howard University, 2003
About Us
The Coleman A. Young Foundation (CAYF) offers a Scholars Program that is unique in:
- Who it serves
- How it serves
- What it accomplishes
Detroit students who receive CAYF scholarships are typically good students who have overcome significant hardship. These students likely would be unable to go to college without the CAYF program.
Staff and volunteers at CAYF are actively committed to the academic and personal well-being of each of its scholars.
This committment is why CAYF has an incomparable retention rate of 85-90 percent and why CAYF scholars graduate at a rate much higher than all the universities they attend.
CAYF is a living legacy of the late Mayor's lifetime of work.
Since 1986, the Foundation has awarded more than four million dollars to more than four hundred students.
All CAYF scholars are expected to help the Foundation in whatever way they can and to carry its good will into the community by helping others.
The Foundation also runs the REAL Skills Program (RSP), formerly Post Secondary Readiness Planning Program (PSRP) which prepares students for high school by teaching life skills that make academic concentration and success more likely.
Our Mission
Our mission is to develop leadership among Detroit's youth through college scholarships, mentoring and other supports for personal growth and development.
