"The CAYF is an extended family that works to develop a well rounded student into a professional working adult. They not only provide funding to assist those who may not have the means to go to college, but they stay in touch with you and connect with you during school and even after you graduate. They provide a plethora of programs to keep you grounded before you go to college like preparation courses in college algebra and college skills for success. During the college years, they have events and networking sessions to prepare you for life after college and they assist you with internships and summer programs. After you graduate, they encourage you to come and give back to future CAYF scholars by mentoring, shadowing, assisting with summer internships, teaching or being a part of the scholar selection process just to name a few. The CAYF has helped me by providing opportunities for me to give back. One of the key measurables that stood in my head when I won the scholarship was that they were committed to young people and that you should always give back. I do my best to give back by supporting CAYF events, tutoring, being a part of the scholar selection process and just being a role model to the many scholars. The CAYF was a group that believed in me even when I doubted … they kept praying for me until I completed my degree(s). They helped me in immeasurable ways to pursue my goals and now I am walking in my season because of their great investment in me!" - Elois Burnett-Thomas, University of Detroit Mercy, 2000

REAL Skills Program (RSP)

About the Program

The REAL Skills Program (RSP), formerly Post-Secondary Readiness Planning (PSRP) Program is a program that was piloted in the fall of 1999 at Malcolm X Academy. The program provides a curriculum led by CAYF staff, scholars, alumni and other professional volunteers who teach Life-Skills building and planning. The intent of the program is to create greater awareness and preparedness for challenges that students may face in high

school. These activities will also help them to be prepared for life after high school. The program has been expanded to serve 60 eighth graders, 60 ninth graders and 60 parents annually from the Metro Detroit area.

Purpose

To provide eighth graders completing middle school and ninth grade students beginning their high school experience with meaningful information and valuable tools for a positive high school experience. The intent is for students to “begin with the end in mind.” A secondary purpose of the REAL Skills Program is to help reduce the alarming drop-out rate that occurs between the middle and high school years.

This 10-week program includes: preparing for educational opportunities beyond high school; building career awareness and exploring employment options; understanding personal finance and managing personal and professional relationships. The program also covers current events, political and social history and geography, in order to expand the participant’s view of their possibilities.

Eligibility

  • Eighth and ninth grade students who are Metropolitan Detroit area residents.
  • Students must complete the RSP application process for consideration.
  • Ability to actively and consistently participate – students should not be participating in other activities that conflict with RSP meeting dates and times.
  • Preference will be given to students with below normal GPA’s and from households with low-to-moderate income.
