Our Students & Their Stories

Coleman A. Young Foundation helps Detroit youth become leaders and equity advocates in their communities. Scholarships, developmental services and mentoring from adolescence through college graduation help them become independent, committed Detroiters, no matter where they go in life. Since 1995, 90% have graduated from college. Here are a few of their stories.

CAYF Importance
Learn about the organization's importance, and why it’s so important for CAYF to continue their work, helping the communities/families they have, since inception.

Hear stories, memories, specific people/interactions/exposure that opened each student’s eyes to aspects of life/school/career they otherwise had not been exposed to.

Learn how being exposed to the program has shaped each student’s prospective and approach to school, their career, and/or even their personal life.

Student/alumni account(s) of how they viewed the program before starting, and how CAYF programming actually helped them reach success in life, during/after college.

Hear some of the ways CAYF programming has specifically equipped each student with skills/conceptual understanding of areas that helped shaped their future and remove obstacles.

CAYF is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization established in 1982 to provide financial support and mentor young Detroiters who seek a college education. CAYF has provided over 450 college scholarships to eligible students from Detroit schools, of all backgrounds.

Acceptance and participation in our scholarship and after school program are the same for everyone without regard to religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, handicap or sexual preference.​
